:: Configuring AIRTEL Broadband In Linux & Fedora ::


Many of my friends or I must say "Techies" :P are desperate to switch from Windows Platform to Freedom of Linux.But one thing that keep them from doing so is "RECONFIGURATION" !!
In order to ease them out a bit I have come with this post .


Configuring Airtel Broadband in Linux :


  • In Ubuntu

Procedure :
1. Open your web browser and Type 192.168.1.1 & Enter the set Username and Password of it.
2. Now the Beetel page will open up, Click the WAN link given on the left side.
3.Configuration table comes up , click the EDIT button.
4.Enter the VPI and VCI values as given below :

  • VPI : 1
  • VCI : 32

5.Click on next button.
6.Select Connection type :

  • PPP over ethernet (PPPoE)

7.At the bottom on this page, there is a drop down menu to select ENCAPSULATION MODE, Select

  • LLC/SNAP-BRIDGING


8.Click next button , Screen comes where it asks for PPP Username and Password :

  • PPP Username: user name that u got from airtel (***********_dsl@airtelbroadband.in)
  • PPP password : **********
  • PPPoE Service Name : airtel
  • Authentication Mode : AUTO


9.Click next button Dialog for Enable IGMP Multicast, and WAN Service comes :

  • Enable IGMP Multicast do not select this 
  • Enable WAN Service select this
  • Service Name: pppoe_1_32_1


10.Click NEXT button , Dialog for WAN Setup - Summary comes :

11.Click on SAVE , Dialog for Wide Area Network (WAN) Setup comes, click SAVE/REBOOT.

Modem will reboot and your modem is configured

Now the NETWORK CONFIGURATION :

  • Static IP : 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.254 (enter any one of these, its the ip range)
  • Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0
  • Gateway : 192.168.1.1
  • Add DNS : 202.56.215.54202.56.215.55


  • In Fedora

Procedure :
1. Go to Applications-> System Tools -> Network Device Control.
2. Press Configure and then press 'New Connection' button in the window. Follow the above steps 1 to 12.
3. After the connection is made, activate it by pressing the 'Activate' button.

Open your web browser and check it.
Since Airtel Broadband offers both LAN Connection and USB connection, to Configure USB Connection in Linux, you need to first install the appropriate drivers.
