Google unveils YouTube Cosmic Panda experiment; completely redesigns Blogger

Google started to refresh the look of its web properties when it introduced Google+, and the trend of unification by design has now caught up with YouTube and Blogger. As some believe, the trend could very well bring other changes, with Google possibly intending to rebrand properties like Picasa and Blogger to Google Photos and Google Blogs. It is obviously a rather major decision to make, but we do not wonder if we will see YouTube being rebranded as the now defunct Google Videos, at least, not for a long while. We do hope to see something like theWhat Do You Love site Google had unveiled, as bridge between all the Google islands on the web.

We've also seen minor cosmetic changes in properties like CalendarGoogle Maps, Product Search, and more.

YouTube Cosmic Panda

The YouTube team has unveiled a new experimental user interface they are calling Cosmic Panda, bringing the new dark UI look that the new Search interface, and Google+ are already following. Videos, playlists, and channels all have new layouts and features, and uploaders will be happy to note there will be new editing tools and channel page designs.

Some Chrome only features have been introduces, such as a new seamless interface to navigate between videos, playlists, and channels. You can try it all out if you choose to participate in the Cosmic Panda TestTube Experiment, here. You can always go back to the old, white interface. YouTube is awaiting feedback before it fully incorporates the new ideas.

Blogger

The Blogger platform was rather completely redesigned with nary an announcement, hoping to stay fit against the WordPress, Tumblr and Posterous competition. The redesign incorporates several features already available on the Google Labs-like Blogger in Draft section, such as the improved text-editor and mobile blog support. The overall UI of orange and white has many of the same buttons and icons as we’ve seen in the new unified UI Google seems to be aiming at. Visit draft.blogger.com to check out the changes.

There are some brand new features as well, such Google Analytics available right on the dashboard, a new and improved post screen, and what looks like an Ad Sense Earnings tab that’s still ‘coming soon.’

iPad 3 to be called iPad HD, is coming this September

Former Engadgeteers report that Apple plans on unleashing the next generation of iPad this fall which I am guessing is a September launch. What other things we know about the iPad 3? We answer this question after the jump.

As always, unknown and unnamed sources are fueling this speculation and claim that the iPad 3 which Apple may call iPad HD will become equipped with a retina display screen with a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels.

The Cupertinos are believed to be targeting a video and photo production industry and will roll out an iPad friendly version of Final Cut or Aperture. If this rumor turns out to be true, we could be in for a shower of Apple products which will include the iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S or bothiPod Touch 5G and of course the iPad HD. Do you see this happening. Share your predictions in the comments section

Apple Updates It iMac line with A new top of the line Apple iMac - 4 GB RAM - 3.1 GHz - 1 TB HDD

Today's iMac has come a long way from the first 15-inch iMac. Take one look and you'll see just how far. A display with edge-to-edge glass covers nearly the entire front of the enclosure. When all you see is the display, nothing gets between you and what's onscreen. Movies, TV shows, FaceTime HD video calls, websites, photos - everything looks stunning on the widescreen 16:9 iMac display. The more pixels a display has, the more light those pixels need to achieve the best picture possible. And that's exactly what the LED backlighting in iMac does: it pushes light through each pixel with remarkable brightness and efficiency. Because the LED backlight doesn't take up much space, the iMac enclosure stays thin - even with all the high-performance components inside. The widescreen iMac display allows more room to separate the two hottest components, the CPU and the GPU. This keeps things cool inside the iMac enclosure. Apple engineers also implemented an intelligent control system that monitors temperatures and delivers just the right amount of airflow to critical components. And the three fans inside iMac have been tuned to be ultra quiet, so you hardly know it's on. Watching a movie, updating your blog, editing photos. Tasks like these require data to travel from place to place. The Intel Core architecture puts the processor, cache, memory controller, and graphics engine on a single chip. Since data doesn't have as far to travel, you get faster performance and greater efficiency. Thunderbolt technology has arrived - and Apple computers are the first to have it. With one tiny port, you get lightning-fast transfer speeds and huge expansion capabilities. Two 10-Gbps data channels per port mean you can transfer data up to 12 times faster than with FireWire 800. And don't worry about a single drive or peripheral tying up the Thunderbolt port: you can daisy-chain as many as six devices plus a display.

iPhone 5 leaked in China

The title of the post says it all. 9to5Mac reports that a Chinese website Sohu.com has leaked out images of what looks like an iPhone 5 running on China Mobile’s 3G network.

iPhone 5

If the above posted leaked image is the real deal, then there are two reasons for the Chinese nation to be excited for:

  • China Mobile is finally playing host to Apple’s high selling iPhone.
  • China will be getting iPhone 5 in the first shipment along with US and UK, as rumored earlier.

Some factors that add weight to this leaked image being that of a real iPhone 5:

  • It has a baseband version of 06.10.01, which hasn’t been released yet.
  • IMEI number missing.

Evaluation or prototype iPhone devices have in the past carried these attributes, so we might be onto something here. But if this is indeed the iPhone 5, it means we are stuck with the same old iPhone 4 form factor and we won’t be getting an edge to edge screen or a larger more beautiful design like this. How do you see this leaked image. Share your opinion with us using the comments box

Google Adds New Features to Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Maps for Android

In the midst of all its redesigningrebranding, and design unification, Google has gone ahead and made some feature changes to its other properties, such as GmailGoogle Docs, and Google Maps for Android. Check them out below:

Gmail

Over at Gmail, Google added the inbox style option, allowing users to quickly switch between style presets in a tab-like format, or a dropdown menu. There are five different style presets, to be used depending on personal taste, usage scenarios, etc. Google listed the five inbox style presets in a blog entitled “New! Pick your favourite inbox style,” and over the next several weeks, it is expected to unveil other inbox styles as well.

  • Classic - This is the default inbox style most people are used to. In the Classic inbox, messages are ordered chronologically, with your most recent email at the top.
  • Priority Inbox - Important and unread messages appear at the top of your inbox, then starred messages, then everything else. Each section can be customized further, so you can create your own inbox style.
  • Important first - This style puts important mail at the top of the page (both read and unread messages). Everything else is in its own section at the bottom of your inbox. You may have noticed that we turned on importance arrows for everyone a few weeks ago; this inbox style separates messages with these arrows from those without.
  • Unread first - Simple: unread mail at the top; everything else at the bottom.
  • Starred first - Starred messages at the top; everything else at the bottom.

To use the feature, users will have to turn on the Inbox Style feature, and then, will have tabs of the styles on top until they settle on one for more than a week, at which point, the styles will be available via dropdown menu.

Google Docs

Google Docs has seen two new major changes, better document sharing on the go with the improved Google Docs for mobile, and new features for Google Docs videos. The new Google Docs for mobile allows tablets and mobile devices to easily sort and share one or more of their Google documents, either as a link, or as an attachment.

With the new Google Docs videos features, Google now allows users to insert videos from their Google Docs lists to their Google Sites, or embed them on the web, and also caption them.

Google Maps

Google recently introduced many new features for its Google Maps for Android application (bringing it up to version 5.7), and you can check them out here. In the meanwhile, it also added the “Download map area” feature to Labs in Google Maps. Google also wants to take the opportunity to point users to the Labs section, where many new features are available for them to try, such as Measure, and Scale bar.

While the ‘Download map area’ option goes a little against Google’s whole always connected philosophy, it is mighty useful for those times you won’t have access to a data connection. The feature allows users to download a section (10-mile radius) of any map when they have internet access, so that they can use that as an offline, passive guide for when they don’t. So while there is no real navigation element, Google hopes the level of detail, as well as the streets and landmarks depicted will help nonetheless.

Cornell scientists develop a lens-free camera

It is quite next to impossible to imagine a camera without a lens. But thanks to Cornell scientists, we now have a camera that has no lens, no moving parts and costs very little money to make. The scientists call this revolutionary camera Planar Fourier Capture Array. Instead of using a lens, it uses the wave-like properties of light to capture what it is looking at. The image construction is later done by algorithms in a computer.

The prototype of the gadget, developed by a group lead by postdoctoral associate Patrick Gill, is a hundredth of a millimeter thick and half a millimeter on each side. Elaborating on 20p restriction, Gill says in a press statement: "It's not going to be a camera with which people take family portraits, but there are a lot of applications out there that require just a little bit of dim vision."The only set back this camera suffers is its limitation to see about 20 pixels on a side. However, the researchers believe that the camera, in spite of its limitations, could be of great use. The fact that it is very tiny and no moveable parts means it can be integrated with several gadgets. Since it is very low costing, it will be easy to manufacturer. In addition, people can make innovative usage of the dim vision capabilities, perhaps use as eyespot for a robot or device.

The scientists have named the camera a Planar Fourier Capture Array (PFCA) as it is based on the principles of a mathematical tool called the Fourier transform. Each pixel in the PFCA counts for one component of the Fourier transform of the image. The image is later constructed using that algorithm on a computer.

The scientists are presently working on the camera's resolution and overall efficiency.

Who is going to buy a Nokia without a Windows Phone now

Nokia has seen its share of the smartphone market slide as its handsets based on the Symbian operating system (OS) went from being top dogs to struggling contenders. There was talk that the Finnish firm would be partnering with a different OS developer for its future projects, a rumour which proved to be true when it recently announced a deal with Microsoft to bring Windows Phone 7 to its next array of smartphones. However, Nokia does not seem to be abandoning its other platforms outright as Symbian is being kept alive in the short term on models like the X7 and E6. The announcement of the Nokia N9, a smartphone based on the MeeGo OS, caused even more speculation that Nokia might not be putting all its eggs in the Windows Phone 7 basket.

The question now is whether consumers should bother investing in a Nokia handset which is not based on Microsoft’s platform. The phasing out of Symbian handsets seems inevitable not only because of poor critical reception but also because the incremental improvements have done little to revive the flagging OS. The Nokia N9 muddies the issue further, because this high end handset is branching of on an entirely different path with software that will not be found on any other mobile. Whether it is an evolutionary dead end, as Nokia CEO Stephen Elop seems to suggest, or the start of a dual platform strategy for the firm remains to be seen.
One interesting aspect of the Nokia N9 is that its hardware and design seems to be the basis for the first Windows Phone 7 handset which is being produced within the manufacturer. Its four inch AMOLED display, eight megapixel camera and 1GHz processor match up with Microsoft’s minimum requirements and spy shots of N9-style mobiles running Windows Phone 7 have leaked online, firming up this point of view.
Of course Nokia has created phones with unique platforms in the past, with the N900 being the most recent example of this. Running the Maemo 5 operating system it confounded average users with its interface, although won approval amongst technophiles thanks to its flexibility. The Nokia N9 looks to be much more user-friendly, although the CEO has made several attempts to assert that the firm will not be working on any other MeeGo-based smartphones, making the N9 even more special.
The death of Symbian as a primary Nokia mobile OS seems certain, but that does not mean that Nokia is not dedicated to providing continued support for the platform. This is good news for anyone who has bought an X7 or E6 handset in recent months on a two year contract, because you will want to see your mobile getting the updates it needs to stay relevant over the life of your deal. Windows Phone 7 is definitely the future for Nokia, but its history as a Symbian supporter will not be soon forgotten.

Google to shut down Google Talk

Mr know it all, Eldar Murtazin just tweeted a rumor which we simply couldn’t resist sharing it with you. According to the man behind Mobile Review, Google, which is currently busy with its Google I/O 2011 developer conference, will be shutting down Google Talk in favor of Skype.

    Here’s the tweet:

Rumour. Google want to close own platform for Skype from next versions of Android. Instead of that all users will receive updated Voice app

The key thing to note here is that only the Android version of Google Talk will be discontiued

What’s our take on it? Well, we are in a total shock at the moment and aren’t in a position to comment on it. All we will say is if the talk of Google Talk being put on the death bed is true, it means Google loves Skype and doesn’t want their own video chat offering app to be a hurdle in Skype’s way.
